Yo, Jun...it's your birthday!

I celebrated by bleeptieth birthday a couple of days ago. Nothing fancy. In fact, one might say it was nothing at all. Our plan was for the family to have lunch at the Greenhills Shopping Center. But my nephew still had the flu and had to be taken home immediately leaving me to my lonesome.

So...to celebrate my birthday, I had lunch at my favorite burger place "Brothers Burger". After that, I went shopping for some cheap trinket that I can take home with me. I was thinking along the lines of a small figurine or a desk caddy. Instead, I found this:

Happy Birthday...tttooo yyyooouuu...
It's Big Barda from the comic book series Mister Miracle created by the late great comic book legend Jack Kirby back in 1971 as part of his Fourth World saga. (I was three years old then. Do the math, you Sudoku fanboys you.) Big Barda was based on Aemrican actress Lainie Kazan as well as Kirby's own wife Roz Goldstein.

I saw Big Barda at a mall here in Manila and she was on sale for less than two dollars. That was surprising considering that she was sporting a fantastic sculpt and paint...particularly her face. I wasn't too crazy about the version without the helmet, and the other figures had a less than perfect paint job. The amount of articulation on this figure makes her tend to fall over but she's sturdy when posed properly.

At less than two dollars, I must say, she's quite a bargain. Now, if I only had a place to display her.
